In my work with organsiations over many years I’ve been struck by the numbers of professionals who enjoy deploying their specialist skill set, and who want to grow in their impact, influence and value, but don’t wish to follow a generalist career path into people leadership roles – subject matter experts such as lawyers, auditors, project and product managers, engineers, finance and ICT specialists to name a few. Sadly, senior level learning is often focused exclusively on people leaders. The technical cohort can have very limited exposure to development opportunities, or they’re corralled into unsuitable people development programs, and as a result their value to their organisation is often lost.

Expertunity is an evidence-based framework which addresses this gap by identifying the unique competencies that enable specialists to thrive and to add maximum value to their company regardless of their technical domain. The framework incorporates a unique Expertship competency model and a range of developmental programs and strategies targeted specifically at Subject Matter Experts as distinct from people leaders.

Mastering Expertship programs have been run successfully over a number of years in Australia, New Zealand and globally, with program evaluation results showing both participant and organisational benefits including

Technical experts adding far more value to their organisation

Retention of top technical talent

Avoidance of single-point-of failure expertise gaps

Re-energising long-term technical employees

Re-engagement of demotivated or cynical technical experts.

In March this year my colleagues and I delivered the first 5 day Mastering Expertship program for technical experts here in Adelaide. The program was extremely successful, receiving a net promotor score (NPS) of 78. Participants included scientists, HR experts, IT specialists, engineers and planners. Feedback from both participants and line managers of the experts has been so positive we have planned a second Mastering Expertship program to be run face to face in Adelaide in October.

The program will be facilitated by two experienced local facilitators, myself Jo Saies and Wendy Taylor. We would be looking at a program of 12-16 participants with a minimum of 2 per agency, and wanting to confirm participant names by early August.

Attached is a brief overview of the Mastering Expertship program and a guide to selecting participants.

Would you be interested in finding out more?

If this is something worth exploring further as a development option for your subject matter experts please book a 30 minute call to provide some more context and answer and questions.

Thanks for your interest in Expertship

Jo

No-one would dispute the importance of integrity, but sometimes we only speak about integrity in the context of a serious public breach. This one day conference at Adelaide’s newest venue – the Adelaide Oval Function Centre – is a great opportunity to walk the integrity talk.

The conference looks at the ethical dilemmas being faced daily by sportspeople, politicians, business leaders, media magnates, charity workers, professionals and, at some time, all of us. The conference will focus on how the psychological make-up of groups and individuals can influence these decisions.

See the flyer for conference program and speakers.

PB Performance Coaching Director Jo Saies will share her thoughts on integrity from her perspective as past Education Manager with the Australian Sports Drug Agency, Area Manager SA/NT with the Australian Public Service Commission, and as a past national representative athlete.

In March 2013 the Australian Taxation Office held a month long, nation-wide Learning and Development Expo with the theme Taking Charge of Your Career. The expo aimed to showcase the range of development options and activities available in the ATO, and to engage and excite staff in taking charge of their own learning and career development. Jo Saies of PB Performance Coaching was engaged as one of four high profile guest speakers during the month, and spoke on the topic “What’s happiness got to do with career development?” The presentation covered the following topics and key messages

Taking personal responsibility for your career development

Defining goals and pathways, creating professional development opportunities, accessing resources

Aligning career with personal values and core strengths

Resilience and well-being at work

Enhancing job satisfaction through job crafting, engagement, finding meaning and purpose

Linking personal, professional and career development

Mindset, taking risks, being proactive, managing confidence

The presentation was based on the science of positive psychology, interwoven with personal scenarios and examples which demonstrated a pro-active and self-initiated approach to career development and satisfaction. Over 300 people attended live and via tele-conference, with Jo taking questions via text from around the country. Positive feedback was submitted instantaneously via phone, email and text by APS1 to Executive Level staff. Vanessa North, Expo Co-ordinator and Director Strategic and Shared Services, Learning and Development, noted ‘Jo’s presentation was polished, insightful, informative, inspirational and appealed across the board to the wide range of employees attending. Many thanks Jo for a wonderful experience’.

The presentation was made available to all staff throughout the ATO as part of an electronic expo show bag. You can view Jo’s presentation below.

Archived Event

Dr Martin Seligman has now completed the first month of his Thinker In Residence in South Australia. A number of heartening and inspiring things have already arisen from his visit:

The number of people – professionals and public alike – who are interested or actively working in the field of positive psychology and well-being. Each of the four public forums was completely booked out, with nearly 3000 people attending one of the two public lectures at the Festival Theatre and St Peters College. To view these two talks click on the links below

The importance and feasibility of psychological immunisation of our young people – building up resilience, character strengths and psychological fitness to guard against trauma, anxiety, stress and depression

Dr Seligman’s bold hope that South Australia, by adopting a systematic approach to well-being measurement and intervention, could become an international prototype for how an entire population can be supported to flourish – not just economically, but psychologically

The recognition that if this is to occur, we need to skill up our educators, health professionals, parents and service providers in positive psychology and well-being interventions. There seems to be some discussion about a version of the UPenn MAPP (Master of Applied Positive Psychology) being developed in Adelaide.
STOP PRESS: Melbourne University has declared its intention to offer a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from 2013, with professional development programs being run in the second half of 2012. Contact for enquiries Mr Field Rickards, Dean of Education f.rickards@unimelb.edu.au

In speaking with Dr Seligman both in Adelaide and Sydney, I asked what he thought was stopping us achieving his vision – that by the year 2051, 51% of the population would be flourishing? Part of the answer lies in a systematic and co-ordiated approach to the development of well-being, and to this end I am continuing with my commitment to the professional development of the field of positive psychology within SA, through the Happiness and Positive Psychology Interest Group. See more about the group here.

Christmas is a time of great happiness and good cheer, when we spend time nurturing important relationships and practicing kindness, appreciation and gratitude. ‘Yeah right, what planet are you on’ I hear some of you say! Happiness doesn’t just happen because it’s a certain time of the year or because the media and commercial marketers direct that it should be so. Like anything worthwhile in life, we have to work at happiness – we have to understand what leads to happiness and how we can create if for ourselves and others. So if you’re needing some inspiration at this time of year, you won’twant to miss the Adelaide premiere of HAPPY!

HAPPY is a feature length documentary that leads viewers on a journey across 5 continents in search of the keys to happiness. The film addresses many of the fundamental issues we face in today’s society: how do we balance the allure of money, fame and social status with our needs for strong relationships, health and personal fulfilment?

Through remarkable human stories and cutting edge science, HAPPY leads us toward a deeper understanding of why and how we can pursue more fulfilling, healthier and happier lives. HAPPY takes the viewer from the bayous of Louisiana to the deserts of Namibia, from the beaches of Brazil to the mountains of Bhutan. Listen to the wisdom of a Kolkata rickshaw driver and hear from some of the world’s leading happiness researchers. HAPPY combines real life human drama and cutting edge science to provide insights into the mysteries of happiness.

Archived Event

Flow, a state of gratification we enter when we feel completely engaged, is characterised by intense absorption and involvement in the present moment. Positive psychologists believe the experience of flow is an essential component of optimum human functioning.

I am pleased to announce the next Happiness and Positive Psychology Coaching professional development forum for 2011 will take place on Wednesday 9th November and will feature this fascinating topic.

Topic:
Engagement and Flow: Personal, Coaching and Work Applications

Guest Speaker:
Mario Virgili, Psychologist and Positive Psychology Doctoral student

Details:
Wednesday 9th November 2011, 5:00 – 7:00pm
The Robin Hood Hotel, 315 Portrush Rd Norwood

Cost:
$10 at the door

RSVP: by Friday 4th November (email via the link at the bottom of the page)

The forum will look at how individuals might increase flow in their lives in support of optimum human functioning, and then consider employee engagement from an employer’s perspective – is it possible for an employer to ‘engage’ an employee, and if so how? I will be joined by Psychologist Mario Virgili, who has worked extensively with individuals and teams in organisations and is currently completing a doctoral study on positive psychology in the workplace.

As per our regular meeting format, there’s an opportunity for participants to network, share relevant resources and find out about what’s coming up in the field of happiness and positive psychology.
